I’ve just written the attached article for The Manager, the magazine for all football managers in the land – yea, I’m in no doubt that a good dose of FED could work wonders for many of them!!
In writing it, it struck me that football managers are often a great example of something we see everywhere – people in leadership positions who have spent nowhere near as much time studying and learning how to lead well as they have spent learning how to be great at their functional skill eg marketing, finance, economics or playing footie.
So my question to you is:
“What would you do if how well you performed as a leader was a major part of how well you will succeed in your career, if not your life?“
I had a laugh with a group the other week and asked them “what would you do if how well you played the clarinet was the key influence on how well you’d do in your career and how much money you’d earn?†The answer was immediate and clear “we’d get guidance on how to do it, practise like there’s no tomorrow and get regular feedback on how we’re doing.†I thought the answer was great. And why would it be any different if it was how well you led that was the key factor influencing your future?
So, what do you see about how you’re going about getting better at leading? And what would an even more effective approach look like?
Best wishes for a good week,
Steve…
