Are you powerful in giving people feedback? It’s such a simple thing to do and it’s so important. So how about your leader? Do you go out of your way to tell him or her how they are doing? I remember working with one senior leader who told me that he learned the value of giving valuing feedback when he heard his Chief Exec on national radio. He was in his car and when he got home he called his boss, congratulated him on the interview and told him he thought he’d come across really well. His boss really appreciated the call and told him he was the only person in the whole company who’d taken the time to let him know what impact he’d had. In that moment their relationship grew significantly.
Some people of course don’t feel it’s their job to give their manager positive feedback and that it would be viewed as creepy or inappropriate. But on the contrary I suggest that your leader needs exactly this encouragement and support. It builds the sense of joint commitment, it raises individual energy and it supports learning. So is there anything that stops you from giving your leader your feedback? And how about speaking to some of the things that you really appreciate about them or that they have done really well? Why not give it a go.
