Does vulnerability weaken your leadership?

One of the business books of last year, according to Fast Company, is ‘Daring Greatly’ by Brene Brown.

In essence Brown’s big theme is vulnerability which she says is central to relationship and engagement. Vulnerability is in fact a strength. None of us are failure proof, we are going to feel vulnerable – it’s part of being creative and daring to take a risk. It’s key to our leadership. Trying to get it perfect all the time, she suggests, is simply a defence mechanism to avoid shame, ridicule and criticism.

From a FED perspective the calling here is for leaders to recognise that in vulnerability lies the seed for our own and other people’s development and performance. It’s ok to ask for help, it’s ok not to know what to do, it’s ok to feel doubt. And equally it’s ok to show you care, to like other people and even, dammit, to enjoy work.

Leadership nudge: in what relationship might you ask for help or advice or show how much you care?
